Systems design comes first
JLH Consulting Inc. is a recirculating aquaculture systems design and engineering firm.
We design production systems for operators who care about long-term operating efficiency, system reliability, and total cost of production.
We are not a generic aquaculture consultant.
Our work centers on system architecture, fluid dynamics, oxygen efficiency, and energy reduction. Every design decision is made with those priorities in mind.
The result is an aquaculture infrastructure that is simpler to operate, less expensive to run, and easier to scale over time.
Conventional RAS leaves efficiency on the table
Many recirculating aquaculture systems are built by stacking components. Tanks, pumps, filters, oxygenation, and controls are added one layer at a time. The outcome is often high energy demand, unnecessary pumping stages, and operational complexity that grows over time.
JLH was founded to address that problem at the system level.
We design RAS as integrated hydraulic systems, not collections of equipment. That philosophy led directly to the development of RASWAY®, our patented plug-flow raceway platform.
RASWAY® is a proprietary plug-flow raceway system that creates controlled circular motion zones within linear raceways. This architecture allows full water volume utilization while maintaining consistent water quality throughout the system.
Key outcomes include:
RASWAY® is not an add-on or retrofit concept. It is the foundation around which the entire system is designed.
JLH Consulting works with commercial operators, developers, and investors planning new builds or major system upgrades.
Our scope typically includes:
We are selective about the projects we take on. Our systems are best suited for operators who value long-term efficiency over short-term cost savings.
Fewer surprises. Lower operating cost. Better outcomes.
Success for JLH is not defined by how complex a system looks on paper. It is defined by how reliably it performs over time, how efficiently it uses energy, and how manageable it is for the people operating it every day.
That focus shapes every design decision we make.
Experience grounded in real-world operations
JLH’s team combines engineering expertise with decades of practical aquaculture experience. Our systems are informed by operational realities, not theoretical models alone.
We design with the assumption that systems must be run by people, not just maintained on paper. Reducing operational complexity is as important to us as improving technical performance.
Our guiding principles are simple:
Sensible
Swimmable
Scalable
A biological model can be used to help understand the effects of different variables on a system. By creating a model of the system, we can better understand how it functions and how we can improve it.
The biological model will provide the background for designing the system. It will include information goals, species, and budget.
Multiple meetings are scheduled to ensure all your needs will be met by this system proposed.
The final process review is a key step in ensuring the proposed design is covering everything discovered to this point and meets all our clients’ goals.
This feature demonstrates how things move through the system.
This is the foundation of the next steps.
The fun begins, and things start to take shape.
A mentoring program can be a great way to help our clients succeed. It can provide guidance and support as they start the process of running their RAS. Maintaining a good mentorship relationship is key, as it will help ensure that the recirculating aquaculture system owner receives the best advice possible production begins and continues.
Some words from our clients.
5 star service rating from me. From full aquaculture system design, through to partial design of components or simply engineering related discussion and troubleshooting, the JLH team provide highly valued service.
Customer
I have worked with JLH for over 2 decades on numerous RAS projects. Initially JLH provided input into the expansion of my own RAS facility (2002). From 2005 to 2022 we have worked as associates utilizing JLH designs in all projects.

Customer
John is the consummate professional. He says what he can and will do and then does it. His knowledge regarding RAS systems is vast and his skill at designing them is world class. He is impressive.
